Skiing & Snowboarding
Being a country with more than a hundred of mountains, Serbia is suitable for all sorts of skiing and snowboarding holidays. Some of the lower Serbian mountains like Zlatibor, Divcibare and Goc offer perfect condition for beginners to learn the basics, while more higher mountains like Kopaonik and Stara Planina challenge even the most experienced skiers and snowboarders. Thanks to the recent construction of new resorts, slopes, ski lifts and snow cannons – skiing conditions have been significantly improved and after many years Serbia is once again considered to be a great destination for budget ski holidays in the environment of almost untouched nature.
Kopanik
Kopaonik is the most famous ski center in Serbia, and without any doubt, one of the most beautiful ski centers in South-Eastern Europe. With a yearly average of 160 days under snow and 200 sunny days, Kopanik offers perfect conditions both for skiing and snowboarding. It’s highest point is called Pancic’s peak (2017 m) and in total, the ski centre offers about 15 easy slopes and 14 more challenging ones, including 3 runs compliant with the FIS standard. Ski lifts and other infrastructure is being frequently updated, and since last year there are several snow cannons that will make skiing possible even in case of a low snow season. But one of the things that make Kopanik so special is for sure a very unique mix of skiing, great food and unforgettable nightlife, as the resort is a favourite pick of many Serbian and regional celebrities.
Stara Planina
Stara Planina (Old Mountain, also known as Balkan Mountain) is a mountain range in the eastern Serbia that stretches between Serbia and Bulgaria in a total lenght of about 550km. Apart from beautifull landscapes, thanks to the untouched nature Stara Planina is also known for many mineral water springs and as the home one of the world’s finest types of cheese called “Staroplaninski mountain kackavalj”, that used to be served even in the White House. Coming back to the skiing, it should be mentioned that Stara Planina is still a developing ski and snowboarding destination. Although Serbian side of Stara Planina currently has only 3 slopes in a total length of about 2km, many other slopes have been designed and are pending construction. In addition, the ski resort Stara planina is equipped with snow cannons, ensuring that visitors can enjoy winter sports even in lack of natural snow.
